Hiking and Other Activities

Hiking

Nice blue skies for hiking. We chose the Potters Creek Trail because it was moderate yet in the mountains. I love it when there’s a surprise! Towards the end of the trail there was an old hiking cabin. It’s no longer in use but at one time hikers had a place to shelter overnight. There were a couple of rooms with a fireplace and metal bunks attached to the cabin walls.

It’s great hiking this time of year because you can see all the rock formations and into the forest We also came across an old settlers cemetery. It was mostly a bunch of plain rocks standing up to show were people were buried.

The weather has been up and down. It’s been cold and cloudy, snowy, warm and rainy with blue skies in between. The last couple of days have been warm – high 60’s.

The roads through the park were closed yesterday due to high winds around 85 miles per hour. Even in the foothills we saw rocks in the road and where trees had fallen across the road.

The pic shows the creek lower and clearer than when we first arrived. Now they overflowing due to the recent rains very fast brown muddy water. I’m thinking the lower mountain roads could be closed today due to flooding.

We did a quick drive around and then drove through Gatlinburg. My goodness! So many people. It’s like Wisconsin Dells tripled and quadrupled!! People were jam packed on the sidewalks. Needless to say, we didn’t stop. Way too many people. Some of the crowd may have been because the roads were closed so people looked for other activities.

However, this is a highly visited national park – 11 million people last year. I’m so glad it’s been mostly open even through the government shutdown.

Activities

Just for grins we drove an hour to visit the Bush Bean Museum and had our picture taken with Duke. Jake gave us the whole family history and how bush beans are made. It was something to do and we bought a bunch of canned beans in flavors that we don’t see in our stores.

Of course we had to try lunch in their cafe. Sean had the white chicken chili and I had pinto beans – both came with cornbread. This was much better than the food we had at Grandma Ogles at Dollywood. (Ogles is another family name in Pigeon Forge, some of the very first settlers).

Sorry Grandma Ogle I’m fond of Bush Beans!!

Bean shopping!

Since we are staying at a cabin, we haven’t really been eating out too much. Last night we went to Blue Moose for wings and to watch the Badger game. They advertised as a sports bar and a great place to watch a game. The key word here is “watch”. They played music so no one can actually listen to the game. We tried the wings (I give them a 3.5 out of 5) and Yee Haw beer once again.

Badgers beat Miami! 35-3!

Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg

This area really is a huge tourist Mecca! Everything for a family vacation. And there are lots of families! Go karts, arcades, souvenir shops, mountain coasters (fun), various museums (Titanic, Alcatraz Crime museum, Hollywood Wax museum, MagiQuest, Paula Deen’s Lumberjack Feud, etc., etc., etc!) and outlet malls (yuck).

We did stop at a Coleman store because they were having a 40% off sale. One problem with stopping here is it shows just how much camping gear we’ve acquired l. Too much and we realized we didn’t need anything else.

Plus there are plenty of theaters in the area (Dolly Parton’s Stampede, Hatfield’s and McCoys, Opry, Comedy Barn, Motown, etc.).

We went to a Christmas Show here. It was a lot more fun than we expected! It was a good cast of characters.

Now I will admit it, I like these corny type of theater shows. I think it’s fun entertainment! Glad we went to a couple; ok I guess it was 5 shows counting the ones at Dollywood 🤭.

The pics below show some of the entertainment for Christmas at the Opry. It has us laughing out loud at time plus a lot of good Xmas music even a bit of southern gospel. Enjoyable!

Plus for The Voice fans, this is Chris Blue performs. He had a few singing acts in the show

Getting Around

Due to the traffic, it typically take 30 minutes to go a few miles. We’ve been finding the backroads so this helps us get to where we want to go without waiting for stop and go traffic. It’s been a pretty drive through the back hills too and we see how folks really live around here. A lot of nice mountain cabins.

Overlooking Gatlinburg

We’ve been getting a lot of use out of the hot tub in the evenings. I’m thinking it might be nice to have one at home, we might need to check it out.

Me trying to remember the hot tub for future reference

We’re both tired now. Today were both ready to go home!

After 7 night, we’ve decided there is no reason for us to ever come back to this portion of the country again! Been there done that kind of thing.

However, we would like to go camping in the mountains someday. Somewhere not so crowded!

Merry Merry 🥾⛰

Yesterday was a beautiful Christmas Eve day for hiking the mountains! The sky was robin egg blue and no clouds. The ice frosted mountain top trees were shimmering in the clear skies.

We drove the 11 mile scenic tour through Cades Cove. There were about 15 different stops along the way; old settlers cabins, Baptist church’s, and even a sorghum mill. Interesting enough the churches stopped having sermons during the Civil War because as one preacher put it “we was union and they was not”. Neighbors against neighbors.

Glistening tree tops are frosted with ice. Can’t really tell from this photo but it sure was pretty.

Oliver Cabin

After a nice day of hiking we had a relaxing evening back at the cabin.

Christmas Day

Santa 🎅 came down the chimney last night and left us an Xmas Schnauzer baby (Ludwig) plus matching schnauzer socks socks for each of us.

Today we went through Gatlinburg into the mountains.

One of our first stops was Chimney Tops. This area was burned in the fire 🔥 last year. We saw quite a few charred trees but so far haven’t seen the whole forest burned down.

Once again there are a lot of people out enjoying the day! The mountains have snow so it was delightful to see all the families frolicking in the snow and making snowman. Here is my contribution.

Trail to Chimney Top

Chimney Top, this is where the fire was last year

Sean hiked up while I made a snowman and waited in the car. Yes this was too strenuous for me! New Years new goal!

Campground nature trail

A row of snowman.

Kids were having a blast in the snow. There are many new snow ⛄️ ⛄️ ⛄️ people left on the mountain. There were families everywhere!

This evening we went on a dinner date to “The Hatfield’s and McCoys Christmas Disaster”. It was really corny and goofy. The acting was crazy – one moment they’re singing and playing music; the next thing you know the floor opens and they are high jumping into a pool and then … there are dogs catching toys flying across the water. It was laugh out loud fun!

Dinner was pretty good. The menu was all you can eat southern fried chicken, bbq pulled pork, real mashed potatoes, coleslaw, soup, biscuits, and chocolate puddin’ with whipped cream for desert. We weren’t expecting much so it was a pleasant surprise. One helping was plenty!!

More pics from our evening.

Waiting for fried chicken

This has been one of the best Christmas’ ever! It’s nice to get out to enjoy other parts of the country and see how they celebrate their Christmas!

There are lots of Kids (young and old) out having fun!

Lights are everywhere

Merry Christmas! 🎁🎄

Christmas in The Smokies🎅🏻🎄

Well, it’s our first Xmas without Shiloh our little Christmas doggie.  We miss her immensely.  However, now that we are dog free for a few months we decided to take a vacation before bringng home our next Schnauzer puppy. 🐶

Sean and I had some vacation time to use up, so we were looking  around for ideas.  I came across a web ad for Christmas in The Smokies!   It looked like exactly the type of touristy thing we should do:

  1. Cabin with hot tub in the mountains (ok hills)
  2. Dollywood
  3. Breweries
  4. Hiking in the Smokies
  5. And a Xmas Dinner Show

We arrived at our cabin in Pigeon Forge. It’s a great location and close to activities.  Our first activity was to soak in the hot tub and relax after a long drive. After that it was Alpine Coaster time!!  There are a few different coasters around here, we went to Alpine Mountain Coaster.  It was $15 for first ride and and $8 for additional rides.  I was amazed at how fast it went especially when I let it fly by not applying the brakes.  I was whipping around those corners.  Here is Sean getting ready.

Going straight up

Later that day we went to The Island.  It has shops, games for the kids, a few rides, a few restaurants  and some music.  We went straight to the Yee Haw taphouse 🍺🍺.  Beer was pretty good.  We both liked our choices.

Yes Haw! Yum!

Pigeon Forge is fully decorated with Xmas lights.  A lot of very touristy activities, shows like they have in Branson, arcades, etc.  What really makes it so unique are the foothills with lots of cabins, resorts, houses, etc. We are up in the hills but only about 5 minutes from the Parkway which is the main drag from Pigeon Forge to Gatlinburg.  You would never know it from where our cabin is located.

Dollywood was our next adventure major adventure.  We bought our tickets online when we thought it was going to be sunny.  Well guess what!  It was a cold rainy day!  We already had our tix so away we went.   Luckily the rain mostly held off until evening.  It also meant the park wasn’t packed.  The most we waited for a ride was 5 minutes, not including the half hour for driving a kiddy car.  We had an orange Chevy with flames.   LOL

Santa’s everywhere

We rode The Dollywood Express

Sean and I went on most of the rollers coasters.  There as only one big one we didn’t do, it was the kind that your legs dangle free.  They really do up the dolly sorta backwoods hillbilly theme.  Plus they have themed coasters that are fun, fast and scary.  We both liked the Tennessee Tornado best!   They were all fun and I’m surprised we liked them cuz we usually don’t do the big upside down twirl around coasters.

This isn’t a very good picture. Doesn’t do justice to all the coasters there.  It was too cold and rainy to take pictures.

Towards the end of the day we went to a few Christmas skits.  Good family fun and lots of Christmas carols to get a person in the holiday spirit.

The whole place was lit up for Christmas.  Really pretty. Everyone’s has a big smile on their faces and wishing you a Merry Christmas.  It felt like a good ole old fashioned Christmas.

A lot of families travel here for the holidays and stay in the surrounding cabins and campgrounds.  I guess we didn’t realized this when we booked our cabin.  So glad we did!!!
